The Republic of America

Buckley and I have been a bit slack about our posting of later. Sorry for that. We’ll try to make up for it this weekend. In the meantime, I saw a letter to the editor in the Salt Lake Tribune that I thought I’d like to highlight. I think the wording and tone are heavy-handed, but the bottom line is correct: America is not a democracy and was never intended to be one. America is a constitutional republic, with a very few exceptions of democracy, in order to guard against the tyranny of the majority.

What Is It About Families?

Families are the basic unit of society and we are flogged with “family values” every day (as if all families were alike and had identical values). Yet to me families are the most puzzling of all social constructs. This week I had a conversation with a coworker and we decided that family behaviors can be downright weird.
